Reading the map

Markers show each artist’s origin city — where they are from, which is often not where they live or work now. Where only a wider area is documented, the marker sits on that area rather than pretending to a precision the record doesn’t have.

Marker states

• 9Zoomed out — a count of the artists in that area. Click it for the list.
• Zoomed in — the artist’s photograph. Click to open their profile.

Coverage

Origin cities are compiled from public sources and may be approximate; where an artist’s exact origin is not well documented, the marker says so rather than claiming precision. The static fallback picture is derived from Natural Earth via the public-domain world-atlas dataset.

Markers show the artist’s photograph where a freely-licensed one exists, and the generated portrait plate otherwise. Photo credits are on each artist’s profile.
